My Personal Journey

Hello!

My name is Pavel Filimonov, M.D. I am a holistic and integrative psychiatrist who combines nutritional medicine (orthomolecular psychiatry), energy medicine, and other alternative modalities in the treatment of mental health conditions.

I graduated from medical school in Moscow, Russia. My medical specialty then was Intensive Care, and for several years I worked as an attending physician in the intensive care unit at the famous Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute – Russia’s finest medical center.  As a young doctor, I had the opportunity to come to the USA and participate in an exchange program at John Hopkins University Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.

While my life as a doctor had initially begun in a different field, my passion has always been in the field of human consciousness. My great-grandfather was a famous psychiatrist in Tzar’s Russia, and had the finest education from Vienna, Austria. I feel as though I have many generations of passion for psychiatry coming through me and had an opportunity to explore this when I came to the USA. It was while in the US that I decided to change my medical specialty to psychiatry.

My residency in Psychiatry was at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, with additional training at the The William Alanson White Institute of Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in New York City. I carry an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of New York and am a member of the American Psychiatric Association.

As I was evolving as a psychiatrist during the years I worked in both hospital settings and private practice, I couldn’t help but notice obvious limitations in psychotherapy which I felt was too time consuming, vague and unpredictable and psychopharmacology, particularly for the treatment of different kinds of anxiety disorders and depression. I became interested in other ways to help my patients operate in the modern world and in overseeing their mind/body/spirit balance. I trained myself in various energy medicine modalities, meditation and nutritional/lifestyle counseling.

I personally walk the talk that I teach and use with patients in sessions. I am a long-term Vipassana meditation practitioner and have taken numerous 10 day silent meditation retreats. Lately I have become a student and practitioner of Advaita Vedanta and modern Non-Duality teachings. I have had the experience of living a 100% raw plant-based food lifestyle, and have experimented with different super-foods which has been very rewarding.
